The president did not specify the steps he took to empower the police to make arrests, but threatened to arrest and jail protesters such as those who attempted to overthrow a monument to the former president Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Park near the White House on Monday.

“I have authorized the federal government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys a monument, statue or other such federal asset in the United States with a sentence of up to 10 years in prison,” Trump tweeted. and cited the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act. this may be relevant. “

Police intervened Monday before the Jackson statue was damaged. A week earlier, the statue had been vandalized with graffiti.
