Ryder Cup postponed due to coronavirus

(Reuters) – This year’s Ryder Cup, slated for late September in Wisconsin, has been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers announced on Wednesday.

The highly contested biennial team competition between the United States and Europe, known for its noisy and partisan crowds, was originally scheduled for September 25-27 at Whistling Straits. It will now be held from September 24 to 26, 2021.

The Presidents’ Cup, which will pit a 12-man team from the United States against international players outside Europe, has also been postponed for a year and will be played from September 22 to 25, 2022 at the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina. , announced the organizers.

Organizers said medical experts and public authorities in Wisconsin were unable to provide any certainty that it would be possible to organize an event responsibly with thousands of spectators in September.

“As disappointing as it is, our mandate to do everything we can to protect public health is what matters most,” said PGA General Manager Seth Waugh in a statement.

“The spectators who support the American and European teams make the Ryder Cup a unique and captivating event and playing without them was not a realistic option.”

The Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup are the latest events in a ravaged golf calendar to be struck by the coronavirus epidemic, which has already forced the postponement of three of the sport’s four majors when the British Open was canceled.

“These two leading international team events are fueled by the spirit of the fans,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

“With the uncertainty of the current climate, we fully support the decision of the Ryder Cup to delay one year to ensure that fans can be part of the incredible atmosphere of Wisconsin, and the delay of the Presidents Cup next year was the right decision to allow this option. ”
